Gratitude in the Tides

Reflections on what we take for granted

Living within a few miles, or for some a few hundred feet, of the ocean never gets old. But sometimes we do forget just how lucky we are. Just knowing that the sea is only a quick drive away puts my mind at ease. It is a place that provides peace. Connection. Calm. Inspiration. Curiosity. Energy. Knowledge.

It is a place like no other.

I am reminded of this when I visit the beach with my nieces and nephews, who only get to come to the coast a few times a year. I am reminded of the wonder I felt when I first moved close to the ocean. Every overturned rock leads to a new discovery. Every piece of sea glass is a new coveted treasure. Every answer leads to another question, reminding me to remain curious, to keep wondering. The sound of the crashing waves becomes a novel musical arrangement, rather than background noise.

We are so lucky. Lucky to have the ocean here. Lucky that there is public access for us all to enjoy the waters here in Kittery, not exclusively reserved for private landowners and their guests. Lucky that these waters are clean. That we can swim and surf and wade and frolick in them without worry of contaminants. But that is not the case for all people in all places.

This year I am thankful. Thankful for these waters and the connection I have to them.

What are you grateful for this year?
